Parents are under pressure to both work, and so when they all get in to eat mum (or dad) reaches for the quickest easiest thing to cook and it's the turkey twizzlers or whatever, because time is limited or they're all worn out, so the kids get that. Processed foods contain so much sugar (even the chicken nuggets etc) and salt that the children's taste buds don't identify with REAL food so much. They also love the food because it gives them that sugar kick. I know of a child who lives on just McDonalds happy meals and microwave ready meals. It's just awful. But at schools the situation has got better I think.

Because schools make money off of vending machines and kids have been groomed to crave fatty, salty, sugary foods.

Frankly, I hate that too but I think nutrition starts in the home. If a kid is eating a healthy, wholesome breakfast and healthy snacks and a nutritious dinner then if they get one not so great meal, 5 days a week, 8 months a year...that's not super terrible.

But I agree that schools could (and some do) provide better quality of food for the kids.

Under the new government guidlines Junk food is being replaced with healthy options which must include 5 fruit / veg per day.
As for just water only there (answerd above) should be the option of fruit juice as part of the 5 a day minimum so it seems that the school is not conforming

Probably because it's cheaper(concern #1) and easier. To tell you the truth,I'd rather my daughter be eating a soy burger for example anyway.Who knows if they would cook it good enough or where the meat was from?Schools actually don't do too badly and most offer a wide variety now.

Actually, my school ahve recently just removed all junk food and so now we only have healthy snacks . . . though some aren't that healthy :)
We are only sold water as well, so the government is doing something about it, at least.

Profit that's hat it all comes down to. Selling stuff loaded
with fat that cannot be disposed of any place else
also other rubbish that's disguised as food
the gullible public scoffs down thinking it`s food.
As i said profit for the fat cats.

i have worked in school kitchens and i can tell you the budget is very tight. firms are only interested in ptofits.all that is slowly changing now, but kids dont like healthy menus. for some kids its the only hot meal they get in the day.
