He comes from many sources. His Christian use comes from Saint Nicklaus, a bishop of Turkey who used to give presents to orphans (or something like that-- I'm not sure exactly how the story goes). In fact December 6th is Saint Nicklaus' Day in many European countries, and on the night of December 5th children put their shoes outside their bedroom doors for Saint Nicklaus to come and fill them.

It's easy to see how the name Santa Claus formed from the name Saint Nicklaus, of course! Santa Claus is also often referred to as "St. Nick". ~.^

The American view of Santa Claus is taken from many Pagan religions that celebrate the Winter Solstice with gift-giving and celebration. Celtic Paganism has the most borrowed-- Santa's resemblance to the God of Winter, the Holly King, is uncanny. "Santa Claus is Pagan Too" is a great song that explains it in the second verse:

"He's got that Buddha belly and his top's the Holly King,
They dressed him in that British coat, the cap's a Nordic thing!
They took those horns right off his head and stuck them on his deer,
But he still flies high like Jupiter with a belly full of beer! Oh!

Santa Claus is Pagan too, just like all the rest!
And if you are a merry witch he'll bring you all the best!
So get that star up on the roof and make those cookies too!
'Cause Christmastime is really Yule, and Santa's Pagan too!"

Hope that helped you. ^^

Santa is based off of Odin, who would travel forth on the Winter Solstice and bring presents to His faithful followers.

We can find real happiness by enjoying what we have instead of pining for what we want.

You can make real friends by first loving yourself. If you don't you are just inviting others to walk all over you.

It's an interesting story that you ought to read sometime, but Santa won't bring you happiness. You have to find that within yourself and the best place to start is by asking God into your heart and He Will help you find peace. Also, helping others makes me happy. You don't have to do anything big, just little things. One year I made cookies and took them to the ICU waiting room. It was awesome. God bless you and I hope you find peace and contentment.
