Heat For Earache

I am currently suffering from a severe middle ear infection that turned into mastoiditis. I had been laying my head on a heating pad, but the ENT (Ear Nose and Throat doctor) told me that heat could make the infection worse. Instead I have starting using cold packs. I have actually found that the cold pack numbs my ear and relieves the pain better than the heat.

He also recommended alternating Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Advil (ibuprofen) every 6 hours for the pain. For example, take the usual dosage of Tylenol and then 3 hours later, take a dose of Advil. It is very easy to overdose on Tylenol (no more than 4000 mg in 24 hours) and that way you are more likely to be able to stay ahead of the pain without overdoing the pain medicine.

Lastly, see a doctor promptly if the pain is still bothering you after a couple of days. Ear infections that don't resolve on there own can turn into much nastier conditions, which is what happened to me. I just spent the last several days in the hospital on IV antibiotics and am homebound for another week. No fun at all.

When I had water in my ear causing a bad earache, the doctor actually recommended I use a hot water bottle. Of course that was just for water not an infection, I suggest you get a proper diagnosis if at all possible.

Oh, he also had me use sudafed or a nasal decongestion because that opens up the tubes in the ear too and encourages draining, this is just an educated guess, but that might help either way.

As one of the last people mentioned a cold pack will help faster than a heat pack. Depending on the cause of the earache, a heat pack can swell the tissues and if they are already stretched due to inflamation from an infection, the heat will only irritate it. The cold pack will slow blood flow and reduce the swelling. Best of luck with it, I hope you and your daughter feel better.

I have a son, Joey Niceforo, who is a young 27 year old tenor, with a group called "DESTINO" recording in Vancouver Bc, Canada.

For the last few weeks Joey has had a cold. Just a few days ago he developed an ear ache, a swollen ear and loss of hearing. He was diagnosed with serous otitis media (middle ear infection).

The major concern we have is that Joey and the Group DESTINO have been booked to open the Marie Osmond show in Disney World on April 3,

Have a quick remedy for our son??

Joey's ear got better just before flying.

He also got the special ear plugs for flying, and arrived in Florida, from Vancouver, on April 1st. On April 2nd he told us the ear was almost 100 percent, and he will, with the other, great DESTINO tenors be performing, in the COLORADO BALL ROOM DISNEY WORLD tonight at 7 pm.

This help was so effective, and helpful, to our young Canadian tenor, Joey Niceforo. I'm sure this input and therapy advice will, and has helped others.

Hi, im not sure where you are from but most hospitals if you go to the ER, have a program called Free Care, and you can get checked and they can tell you exactly what is wrong and prescribe you some antibiotics, thats the only way that you can get rid of an ear infection.

No heat soothes and helps with the pain. It doesn't kill the infection though. Try a hot compress like a hot rag or heating pad.
