I collect beer bottles, 1 bottle for each different beer I have ever drank. My collection is pushing well over 500 right now. To start, you must drink EVERY microbrewery beer you can find. Most likely, your favorite beer will be here. I would define the 'best' beer though as the rarest and hardest to acquire. A beer with a flavor that only the most serious of beer drinkers would enjoy. Samuel Adams holds my top two positions. They are interchangeable in my mind. They are the 1999 Millennium Beer & the 2002, 2003, or 2005 Utopius. The Millennium is sometimes auctioned on Ebay.com for about $350, and the Utopius can be specially ordered (sometimes, and only in a few states) if you are lucky. If not, check out Ebay.com again, and you may pick it up for about $150.
P.S. The Utopius is the world's strongest beer. It holds the record for the highest alcohol by volume for a manufactured beer. Weighing in at 25% (50 proof), this beer is to be drunk like a fine sherry, or cognac, in 2oz servings only.

I don't believe this! Part of the question was 'which real ale do you think is best'.
God help us, there are people out there who think John Smiths extra smooth, Budweiser, Stella, Miller Light and Guinness extra cold qualify!!! Is there no hope? Are people devoid of taste buds? Do they even know what real ale is?
In answer to your question, it is probably impossible to say since everyone's tastes vary, but in my opinion (for what it's worth) Harvey's of Lewes and Timothy Taylors of Keighley are the best mainstream brewers - but there are plenty of micro brewers out there who could give them a run for their money.

About anything that comes out of the country of Belgium. Best beer in the world hands down. They have something for everyone.
Duvel is top notch. One of my favorites. There are so many to list though.

Bathams Best Bitter from the Black Country is superb, but hard to get hold of outside the Midlands.
London Pride is good and so is Timothy Taylor Landlord, but nowt compares to Bathams IMHO.

As others have said, everyone's pallet is different. If you are new to drinking beer, you should probably try one that is lighter in color as the flavor is not as strong -- perhaps a light lager. I personally like beers that are brewed locally. They often have a unique flavor and it is great to support the "little guy."
