No, from what I have read it is used to describe either a female at that time of the month or it can be used to give advice on what paths to take in life.

I've never heard this one, but I would guess that a river would be red because of blood in the water, so while a muddy path is messy, it's probably a safer way to travel.

I don't think it has anything to do with female cycles as dymps suggests.
