Easy.

You need two mobile phones.
One of them you set to silent mode and hands free, so that it answers any calls silently and immediately.
You have to leave this phone somewhere strategic, like taped under a table.
The other phone you take with you.
When you think the time is right, you simply call the silent phone, and you'll hear everything that is said near the phone.

Or you could just go down to Maplins and buy a transmitter and a receiver and hook the reciever up to an amplifier and speaker for about 50 quid. You are however breaking the law big time and can be fined thousands of pounds and imprisoned for this particularly if you are doing it as industrial espionage. If you are planning a legal case it is inadmissable evidence if you've taped a suspect without knowledge or consent unless you have a warrant to do so. In domestic situations such as yours it is unlikely that the law will be applied so harshly, however if the person you are spying on presses a complaint it is possible. If you suspect that somebody is talking smack about you, the best way is to confront them face to face with your suspicions. That way at least the air gets cleared. If you suspect that somebody is doing somehing illegal, look for evidence and hand the case to the police. You do have a power of arrest as a citizen but not detention, and it's a thorny issue that might get you into deep water.
