It's a bit hard to know. The best way would be to show your tongue to a doctor.
It's more likely to be infected if:
it is sore and tender to poke at
it is swollen up
it is quite red and inflamed looking
if you have fevers and chills, lost your appetite and feel sick like you have the 'flu
if you have pus coming out of it
The absence of all of those things means it is less likely to be infected.
If you have a bad infection you might need antibiotics. I've seen one tongue piercing where the tongue swelled up so much the piercing was lost inside the tongue and the poor girl had to have an operation because the surgeon couldn't get at it with just forceps.

I do wish they would outlaw this stupid and dangerous practice, but you need to have it examined by a physician. An infection in the tongue can be extremely dangerous. Get it checked unless having your tongue fall out or having a brain infection really appeals to you.
It's nearly impossible to avoid infection as the mouth is a haven for bacteria. The only question is how bad it will be.

it does not mean it is infected. a tongue does take longer to heal because you eat and talk with your mouth, which involves your tongue. just like any piercing it will be red for the first week or so, now your tongue cant show red coz your mouth area is red ans shoes a Brown colour. take a soft toothbrush or face cloth and clean you tongue with gripe water or water with salt(salt prevents infection) or use tooth paste.

When I had my tongue pierced it was very sore the day after but then it was fine, if it is a brown color it is most probable that it is infected. You could try using listerine mouthwash, it kills germs and bacteria.
