Cyprus should be free from any foreign intereference. Greece is mostly out of the problem now. Turkey remains a big problem with their occupation of the norther part of the island and also the UK for holding two small areas in the south. The people of Cyprus is as diverse as any other country and there is no reason to be separated according to religion or athnic background. Hopefully through the european union the democratic values will prevail in Cyprus and the Turkish occupation will end.

If memory serves Cyprus belonged to Greece because the population was almost entirely Greek. At least until the Turkish invasion which was a blatant land grab. The only lame excuse Turkey could come up with was that Cyprus was closer to Turkey than Greece. If Greece didn't defend her citizens what would be the reason for Greek Govt to exist? I am however a pragmatist at heart and know that Turkey won't leave So I think the Best thing to do is make Cyprus An independent state the problem with this and the Greeks greatest fear is that the Turk's are reproducing at a much greater rate than the Greeks so if a vote in the future on an Independent Cyprus joining Turkey were cast the Turks would win on the strength of their population alone and force the local Greek population to either leave or become Turks something Greek pride won't abide and would end up in civil war and unrest again.

You are ignoring one tiny miny point. If Turkish troops didn't enter Northern Cyprus in 1974, Cyprus would be remembered with the ethnic cleansing of Turkish Cypriots now. The West maybe keen on forgetting this soooo "unimportant" fact, but I remember, and Turkish Cypriots remember. Greek Cypriots still reveal that their aim isnot to unite the island, but to own it. I just cannot think what would happen if Turkey wasn't a guarantor country for Turkish Cypriots.

So, yes. It would be much better to have free Turkish and Greek republics in Cyprus. But you will excuse me if I don't believe the Greek side's rhetoric regarding any unification.

Except for your lies about Bush, I agree with you about Cyprus.
Also, the people of Cyprus seem to want to be owned by either Greece or Turkey. At least they did when I lived there.
(Too bad you had to put lies about Bush in with a decent question. Shame on you.)
Since you are wrong about Bush, you are probably wrong about Cyprus, too.
