He obviously wants something, people are intrinsically lazy and only do what benefits them (some people have a warped sense of benefit tho') Maybe he is jealous of what you have in the way of a social life at school (there might be others with better social lives but as you said you aren't at the top of the food chain) maybe you are a target that he sees as attainable.
Try to guess what he wants. maybe he wants to just bring someone down to make himself happy, maybe you stepped on his toes without realizing it. maybe he wants in and you are standing at the entrance.... try inviting him in (next time he's picking on you, say 'I don't have time for this, I'm going to the mall.... wanna come along?' Be blunt but invite him in... even if it's not what he wants it will throw him and be fun to watch)

Many many moons ago, I had a similar problem . I dreaded going to school and having to face this guy every dayBut I will tell you this, sometimes regardless of the outcome, you WILL have to take matters into your own hands and just give this guy a beating like a red headed step child who owes you some money.
You might win,but then you might lose, but at least you will show this guy that you are someone to be reckoned with. Good luck.

you take the issue up with the teacher or principal or indeed knock on his parents door and explain the situation your in .
the reason I'm saying do it on your own bat ,is because you might think you're a sissy if you do it any other way , and besides it will look good that you don't need anyone to deal with a problem ( good learning excersise ) whatever you don't hit him , (after all you don't want to get your hands dirty on a piece of work like him ) besides you would only be lowering your esteem . good luck .p.s you do need to run this by your folks nonetheless .

I know how you feel, I was picked on all through school as a kid, but, do tell a teacher! you're still a kid so enjoy it-I wish I could be that age again! -p.s.: you're NOT a loser.

I know that this will be the hardest thing to do but you have to be super nice
to him. It is the only way to stop him from trying to bug you. Smile and be
sweet. Do not rise to his comments. Smile and be kind. He will give up
if he can't upset you. It will be difficult but worth it in the long run. You will
also be helping build your own character. Try it. I promise it will work.

When he is not looking or unaware you have to smash his head in as hard as you can and dont stop until you are pulled off him.
you may get into trouble but no one will mess with you EVER.
trust me i know for a fact.

Sounds to me like he's jealous of you or your 'status' at school. If he's really bothersome, I'd speak to the guidance counselor at school, or my parents. "Smashing" him won't fix anything, confront him and say "Step off! I'm sick of your nonsense, get your own life and stay out of mine."

Treat this kid as if you like them, they will soon tire of you and move on to the next target.
