The rise and fall of the tides are capable of providing a large amount of power so why have we not heard anything about this in the news? Is this a usable power source?

"Tidal power is the power of electricity generation achieved by capturing the energy contained in moving water mass due to tides. Two types of tidal energy can be extracted: kinetic energy of currents between ebbing and surging tides and potential energy from the difference in height (or head) between high and low tides. The former method - generating energy from tidal currents - is considered much more feasible today than building ocean-based dams or barrages, and many coastal sites worldwide are being examined for their suitability to produce tidal (current) energy."

Hope this helps!

They've been talking about doing this in the Fundy Bay off Nova Scotia for years and Nova Scotia Power won't get off their A$$ and do something. We have the biggest tides in the world here and we're not using this obvious reusable power source.

It is usable power source, and is in use i beleive, below is a link to a company who claim to do it, there are many companies around the world developing the technology. I guess its not in the news because it either doesnt make enough money, or its not interesting enough.

We have, but its constuction and running costs far outweigh the benifits its output is extremely small and unpodictable at the best of times

go to google and look for tidal power and you should find lots of articles on it advantages and disadvantages
