A motor and pump stator(the non moving part of a pump) are enclosed in a can. The Idea is to provide a narrow profile so the entire assembly maybe fit into a narrow opening like a pipe or well.

The motor is at one end and is directly connected to a pump end. The suction for the pump is located where the two half are joined together. Leaving the discharge tobe connected at the end of the pump section.

This design is common for well pumps where the pump diameter is less than 4 inches across. Because of the close tolerance between the pump and pipe wall and where the suction is located water will be drawn past the motor. This water circulation will keep the motor cool.
