You will need to work with the registry. But I would not recommend you do that unless you know what you are doing. It is the backbone of the computer and you break it you are toast.
Safer method is to google it for XP boot screen. Download.com has some freeware. Check there. Cnet.com also has some.
But why? Why does it bother you? It is only there for a moment. It disappears anyway. Just get the functions of the operating system and enjoy working with it than to do all this cosmetics which are way too risky, such as tweaking the registry.

Stardock BootSkin is a program that allows users to change their Windows 2000 and Windows XP boot screens.
Unlike other programs that can change the Windows XP boot screens, BootSkin does so in a safe manner. It doesn't patch the Windows XP kernel. Nor does it require the user to download replacement Windows XP kernels to do so.
Boot screens that use BootSkin are typically under 20K compared to other boot screen programs whose files are over 2 MEGABYTES.
And best of all, BootSkin is free for non-commercial use.
