I've tried every crossword solver, thesaurus everything, it's driving me mad. Any scientists out there?

Are you sure you've got all the letters right then? I checked on a crossword site and got the same answer as the first person. You can check it out by clicking on the link

EDIT: is that last question mark one of the letters? if it is then I think Deflagrated has it right. I came across that too but thought it was too long.

Its obviously some kind of Spar...

Iceland Spar, Satin Spar, Fluorspar, Derbyshire Spar (aka Blue John), Feldspar etc


I think you've got one of the corresponding down clues wrong that is giving the first R.... I think the answer will be "Calcspar"

The answer is Madrepore.

It's actually a type of coral, but it's formed from calcium carbonate crystals.
