how do you hook up DVD player directly in the t.v.?

Depends on the type of output on your DVD player and the input on your TV. Most equipment these days have RCA and also coaxial hook ups. Coaxial is easy,RCA style just requires you to plug them up by the colors of the three cables(yellow,red,white).

Either with a SCART lead, or, s-video and left and right audio leads
