One week going in, one week of, one week going out. Three weeks total.
They usually bleed one week of that.
YES it is true that it would have been better to spay her before. Now you have to MAKE SURE she doesn't get out because if she does she WILL come back pregnant. IF she comes back. You can't even let her out to POTTY by herself because a male dog might jump your fence.
NO it's not true that they 'mature'. They don't calm down. That's a myth that's spread by people who don't understand dogs. Maybe somebody's dog SEEMED to calm down after a heat, but that's not why. I'm sure getting pregnant and giving birth to 10 children at something like age 8 would calm you down, too. Is that really fair to your dog?
Now you have to keep her inside all the time, get her some diapers to keep her from bleeding all over, listen to the male dogs outside howl, clean up after her when she has accidents (it is harder for them to hold their bladders while in heat) ... all that for THREE WEEKS. And all for nothing. She will not calm down or become more mature.
If you're lucky, you might be able to find a vet who'll spay her while she's in heat. But even then he/she will want to wait at least 5 days after she's stopped bleeding.
Get her spayed as soon as possible and get medical advice from your vet or a knowledgeable person, not your neighbor or a backyard breeder.
In the meantime keep an eye on her. There are too many puppies already. If anything being a mother will make her a WORSE pet because she will learn to pay attention to something besides you. Don't force her to divide her attention.

A dog is in heat for 21 days. It is very true that a dog should be spayed prior to their first heat. The risk of mammary cancer increases with each heat cycle as does pyometria (a very serious life threatening infection), reproductive cancers and false pregnancies.
Going through a heat cycle doesn't make a dog calmer & more mature..there is NO good reason to allow a dog to go through a heat cycle.

It is better to spay your dog before the first heat cycle for health problems and also it will cost you less. They will only become more mature if you spay/neuter them BEFORE their first heat cycle. Every dog is different as is every owner who trains their dog..but in most cases, if you want a calm puppy, spay/neuter them before it starts.

Hi!, she should bleed for 1 week, then clear for 1 week, then bleed for 1 more week. She could get pregnant in the clear week. And don't panic she will be fine just be careful of male dogs! If a female dog is on heat then a male can smell them from a long way, i know when my dog was on heat (she was a German Shepard) a little male Maltese climbed a fence about 1.3m tall just to get to her...But when he did get to her, he was to little to get up to mate. SOME vets may spay them when they are on heat.

well a dog is in heat for about 3 weeks and she will bleed for the entire time she is in heat. it is best to fix them before they come into heat because it will cost alot more to have them fixed. the reason why is that the vet has to perform the surgerywhile everything is inflamed and alot harder to work with, has to alot more careful(not that they aren't already) but they have to take more precautions. depending on the breed of dog that you have, after fixing them sometimes they don't calm down til they are between 6-8 yrs old, but sometimes they don't calm down. i have golden retrievers and my oldest is 8 yrs old and he shows no signs of slowing down. i had him nuetered and even after that he still acts like a puppy. they mature after they are 4 yrs old but doesn't mean they will calm down for any reason. after their first cycle they are more active and they want that mating to happen so don't believe everything that you hear about it and if you are not sure then you should go online and look it up because yo will get a better view of it all. i breed golden retrievers and they of all dogs don't believe in calming down till they are ready, they act like puppies their whole lives til they are ready to pass on. i had to do the same thing many, many yrs ago to learn myself and i finally got what i was looking for. good luck
