Ive been on it for 5 yrs. I was told they aren't physically addictive. But almost anything can be psyschologically addictive. If you wanted to come off them it would be best to deal with the issues that make you anxious in the first place. You aren't supposed to come off anything really without consulting your doctor first, just to make sure you dont have withdrawal etc. If I dont take them for a few days I get high as a kite, so I wouldnt just stop them without any supervision if I was you. People might tell you that psychotherapy, counselling etc is all psychobabble but it does work, so ignore them. Most of the people who will tell you how to deal with your mental health are those who've never suffered any problems with their own mental health. So consult your doc. before/if you decide its time to give them up.

Tricyclics (Dothiepin or Dosulepin) are not addictive, but if you have taken them for eight weeks or more you may experience some mild "discontinuation" effects if you stop them suddenly. These do not mean that the antidepressant is addictive. For a drug to be addictive or produce dependence, then it must have a number of characteristics:
should produce craving for the drug when the last dose "wears off"
should produce tolerance ie you need more drug to get the same effect
there should be an inability to cut down or control use
should produce withdrawal symptoms
there should be continued use of the drug despite knowing of harmful consequences.
Thus antidepressants, if stopped suddenly, may produce some "discontinuation" symptoms but these are more of an "adjustment" reaction from sudden removal of a drug rather than withdrawal.

Dosulepin, which used to be named Dothiepen, is not addictive. With regard to continuing with the treatment, this will depend on your diagnosis. Dosulepin is a Tricyclic antidepressant and Tricyclic antidepressants are used to improve mood in people who are feeling low or depressed. The tricyclics may also be used to help the symptoms of anxiety and a number of other symptoms. The tricyclics are the most commonly prescribed antidepressants but there are many other antidepressants. All these drugs seem to be equally effective at the proper dose but have different side effects to each other. If one drug does not suit you, it may be possible to try another. Some people may need to continue taking them for months or even years. It is usually necessary to take them for, at the very least, a month after you have got better. However, it is usually best to take them for at least 6 to 12 months to make sure you are fully over your illness.
Hope this helps

I am on the said drug for depression. No it is not addictive. I was taking 200mg a night to ease my mood swings, and also get a good nights sleep (i did have insomnia, in a chronic way... 5 hrs sleep a week). I have now cut down to 150mg a night, and i still sleep well enuf.
I suppose you could become mentally addicted, but a slow withdrawal should suffice- w/ no probs.
If not, see doc, but i expect he'll say same.

If you go on to Ask Jeeves and type in Dosulepin it will give you a breakdown of side affects and will tell you if they are addictive or not. I always get answers like that for my mom who is on loads of meds xxx
