I have had personal experience with this and I can tell you it is! I had a Ridgeback female that was almost five and she got pregnant. I had a horrible time with the delivery. She was in labor for hours before she produced her first pup and then she stopped cause she was so tired and I had to take her to have a shot to get her going again. She had the rest in rapid succession in which we were lucky because they had all come out of their sacks before they were born . I only lost the last one which was still born . We were on the verge of a C section which you know is a lot of money. But we ended up spending about 500 in two days between the shots and the xrays . Just don't do it . Its not worth it!

Unless you are a registered breeder, your dog has had all breed appropriate health checks performed, you have placed her in agility/obedience/or shows, than don't breed from her! Leave breeding to the experts, so much can go wrong even for professionals! Many bitches can die during whelp, they can need c-sections, they can roll on the puppies causing death and the pups can be still-born, missing limbs (I know a registered breeder who's recent litter includes a three legged pup) etc.
It also depends on her breed, if it is a large breed like a great dane six years old can be more than mid-life, which is too old to have a litter.
I would suggest desexing her.

Yes, especially if it is her first litter or has been a few years since she had a litter. Also a dog should never be considered for breeding before they have had and passed health testing (not just simple vet exams), been show or evaluated to see if they meet breed standard, have an impeccable pedigree, have something to offer back to the breed by way of improvement.
Breeding is a responsability.

If she's never had a litter before I wouldn't breed her now. She's kind've on the old side to be a first time mom.

If you haven't bred her yet, then don't.
If she's already pregnant, then I guess she'll just have to muddle through. Get her good prenatal treament at a vet if she's that old. There could be complications, much as in a human female over 40 having a baby.
