I have a Burmese cat that keeps going into our front room, where our good furniture is. It's an open room, so there is no door. I have done everything I can think of to keep him out, like giving him a swat, chasing him, squirting him with water, short of leashing him, but he keeps going in. I got him and his brother for my birthday last year, and I don't want to get rid of him. What else can I do?

Due to Rowan's answer, I'll add this. I have had cats in the past, and haven't had this problem.

I actually learned about an interesting way to teach an animal where not to venture.
He might be too old now to learn, and the one time I saw it, it was a dog, but... The owners took the dog and every time she got near the rug, they would pick her up gently, carry her over it and set her down on the linoleum, over and over. Eventually she learned the rug was off-limits, and would way patiently at the corner until someone came and moved her to the linoleum. When she came in from the back door after going out for a pee, for example. Most of the house was lino except for the living room which had new carpet.
You could try this, and just repeat the notion of picking the cat up as a deterrent until he stops trying to bother.

In my own experiences with cats, they remind me of two year old human children. They are intelligent, understanding, but desperate to have things run their way without exception. The reason your cat wants to go into the room is because it is forbidden. To the animal, there must be something very interesting and special about the room if there is restricted access. Your cat may also go into the room to get attention. Because there are no doors, I’m sorry to say there is nothing to stop the cat from going in. If you put up gates, the cat will climb over the obstruction, and most cats will ignore sprays or other means to blocking the entrances. The best thing is to monitor your cat in the room and form small ground rules like no scratching furniture, biting cords, ect.
To save the furniture, you may just want to buy a vacuum that is hand held and easy to manipulate (like a little dust buster) and use it once or twice a week to keep things tidy. Hope this helps and good luck!

Cats cannot be trained like dogs. The more you try to keep it out of that room the more it will want to go there. It is the forbidden area and cats are curious. Unless you lock the cat in another part of the house, there's nothing much you can do. Maybe put a scratching post in that room with cat nip on it to keep it away from scratching the furniture. Good Luck!

Unfortunately, by chasing him, squirting him etc., your Burmese has gotten it into his head that its kinda fun to try and get into the forbidden room becuase it immediately gets your attention. So you need to break him of the habit. The only way I can think of is to confine the Burmese in one or two room with a door that can be closed. So he doesn't get too bored with the scene, put him in one room during the day and another during the night. Allow him to "forget" what fun he used to have by creeping into that room with the furnitures... Make sure he has lots of interesting toys and a cat tree or perch to climb on.

the only thing you can do is keep them in your room.cats will be cats there not human.theres no door there so its an open invitation for a cat.if you've done everything then theres nothing you can do .why did your parents allow you to have these cats if they didn't want them to roam the house.i mean lets be serious theres no door.and there cats.i not being mean but maybe they would be better off with some one else.

he will get the message real fast and wont go in other room in fear of being shut in 1 room for a hour or 2

Theres not much you can do.
Cats like to do what they cant especially Burmese ones. I have two of them (brother and sister) and they are little devils. Our house belongs to them and we just live in it.
Just curious what color is it?

Get over it. You can have your cat, or you can have your "open forbidden room". You can't have both.
