yes it believe it does, however, if the baking soda isn't any good it won't work----to check it put some in a glass of water if it bubbles then its still good----have you ever made peanut brittle? the recipe calls for baking soda and thats what makes the peanut butter have air bubbles in it, and causes the peanut brittle to rise.

ummm...... i really dont think backing soda makes a cake rise if im fight yeast does but if your making a cake right out of the box then all the dryingredients should be already mixed into the batter but if you making home made the you would add yeast..... hope this helps.........good luck.
