I also have an older diabetic doberman and she only has 14 units per day. Mind you i did a hell of a lot of research. A raw meat diet and raw meat only no grain no vegetable with a vet approved multi vitamin. She gets 4 small feeds a day calculated by body weight and age so she gets exactly the right amount. Twice a week one of the feeds is replaced by oily fish such as mackeral or tuna. I would suggest talking to your vet about making changes to your dobes diet before you did it though and have your vet involved. At that age a change in diet may not be beneficial so im sorry i cant guarantee this would work but at least its another option. Good luck in making your baby as comfy as possible and keep checking into alternative therapies.

The fact that your dog is on insulin and still has high sugars is an indication to me she is getting too much Complex Carbohydrates in her diet as well. I would increase her diet to include more protein. I am a former nurse of endocrinology. I can tell you more where people are concerned but please don't listen to me or anyone else on here. I know of several humans that actually lessened their insulin intake while on the Atkins diet. Protein stays in the blood stream longer and carbs turn in to sugar. A carb snack at night will allow the sugars to stay to acceptable levels during the longest period without eating. Talk to your vet about a protein diet. Even the raw meat diet could have benefits. But, as I said DONT DO ANYTHING WITHOUT YOUR VETS APPROVAL!

Forgive me, maybe I am innsulting your intelligence, but are you feeding her raw meat, and no foods derived from plants? Maybe you try raw meat for her, no processed dog food. Commercial dog foods have foodstuffs from plants making carbohydrates, and also nasty crap like chicken feathers in it, but is listed on label as animal protien.

Cooked meat is not good for the dog. It's not real bad, but in a dog already sick, I know you want to do all you can.

Maybe you should try raw meat only. Worth a shot. But I'm not a vet.
