I wouldn't insult someone for their upbringing. I know very well and from personal experience that a child is not a believing child but a child of believing parents.
What I would like to address is the apparent inability on the part of many believers as they reach adulthood to recognize the childhood indoctrination that so obviously has sculpted their current metaphysical outlook.
It is readily apparent to me that there is nothing egotistical in recognizing the very well demonstrated truth that geography and family history ALMOST invariably determines ones particular brand of religion. The "one true religion" (as most claim to be) is imposed upon children based on their parents and their locale.
This is itself most certainly not something a child can avoid. The absorption of children into the religious collective to which their parents belong (which in very large part is due to the area of the world in which the parents live) is a long observed and well known occurrence.
What an adult is capable of overcoming, admittedly in opposition to an avalanche of religiously instilled resistance, is that very thing which was instilled into them - the supposed virtue of faith and the belief in nonexistent god. It is a battle for survival; the deeply rooted loyalty to the concept of god fights tooth and nail to preserve a safe haven for itself in the minds of the questioning believers and to salvage wavering faith from the choppy, dangerous waters of logic.

It's not cool to insult someone for having been sheltered but it's difficult not to react when a completely sheltered person believes that they are 'worldly' and has an attitude about it. It's like a person who claims to know all about black people because they knew one once. It's hard not to insult someone after awhile when they insist they know all about everything even though they live entirely in a bubble.

Oh what foolishness! I was not sheltered, I did all I could to rebel against God! There are 2 types of Christians: those who have been brought up Christian or those who merely go to church on a Sunday but have not had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and do not KNOW God. These give Christianity a bad name because they call themselves Christians but do not serve the Lord. Then there are those of us who are born again Christians and who the Lord slowly changes and delivers and begins to turn us into what He wants us to be - an image of Himself.
There are many, many people who have been brought up very very badly in God's name and they do not know God. If they did, they would not do the terrible things they do.
Please, please understand the difference. Born again Christians are NOT religious. Christians who do not know the Lord ARE religious. God detests religion because He wants us to have a personal relationship with Him.
This may not answer your question directly, but it has a LOT to do with it! May the Lord give you understanding :-)

I don't believe christians are sheltered, I believe most are ignorant. No, this isn't an insult, I'm using the proper use of the word .. ignorant ... of their own bibles, their own religion and the history of that religion. I think they lack the intelligence to read the book they follow, or the common sense to see the facts in front of their faces instead of clinging to lies, contradictions, theories and fallicies. I think most are biggotted, closed minded, intolerant and weak.
But sheltered? Nope.
Edit: For the record, I don't insult the person .. I insult their religion, and will continue to do so. Christianity is by far the most offensive and most intolerant of any religion in existence, and deserves no respect. My insults only turn to the person when that person has shown that they too deserve no respect, whether through their words or their actions.
And for the post above who said that atheism is about not knowing, you're a little confused. Agnosticism is about not knowing .. atheism is about not believing period. I'm an atheist. I do not believe in God, or Gods. I believe what science tells me is true, not what the priest tells you to believe. My mind isn't closed, but it's only open to proof and verifiable evidence.

I am a Christian but I have to tell you, your intentions are good but Christians seem to do their share of bashing on this site, too. Sometimes it's a real free-for-all on here. People's religious beliefs are important to them and they get very intense about it. We just have to weed through the anger and try to get to the points people are trying to make in order to help them or learn something.

I don't insult Christians, I just ask a few questions because I'm curious. People who insult other people have serious social problems...or they're just jerks.

A true believer in God in any form does not feel sheltered by God, rather he always feels his presence by his side and God's other name is shelter.
