Have a look at how the gears work on a car maybe on the net or ina car manual. Might sound boring but if you have an idea of whats going on under that little black stick it can help you use them better.

You will be crap with them to start with!
Then after a few lessons and when you have passed your etst you will just naturally be able to use them!
The only advice is (as above) practice!
And DO NOT learn in an automatic, there is just no point because you will only be able to drive crap boring cars!

My advice is practice practice practice.
I don't suggest learning in an automatic as that means you cannot then jump in an manual and drive that. If you learn to drive in a manual then you can drive an automatic no problem as your licence will cover it. It won't if you pass in an automatic.

i too had a blank mind when it came to the gears whilst learning to drive. 23
if you think, the gears are in a "H'' pattern its easier...

Down for one, up for two over for three & over & down for four... Practice this on a joy stick from a computer game..as its similar..be patient..you will get it in no time!! its easier if you buy your own little car & go out & practice with a friend or relative! XXX

Could you not ask if you could learn to drive an automatic car? Just put it in "Drive" & you don't need to worry about gears.

Yes,I was rubbish with gears,so learnt in an automatic, and passed first time.Although I am not allowed to drive a manual car,I have no desire to....my little automatic Corsa suits me fine!
Go for it,why struggle?
