I have made and painted many pieces of furniture using MDF.

I fill any nail or screw holes with wood filler and sand smooth. Then I sand the edges of the MDF with 150 grit sandpaper and prime the whole piece with Kiltz. Then I resand the whole piece with 150 grid sand paper and again I put extra effort into the edges.

The edges are not as dense as the rest of the MDF because it has not been subjected to as much concentrated pressure as that top and bottom of each board. Because of this, the edges absorb more primer and paint and will give a different finish if not well sealed.

Once the whole piece is primed and sanded, you can use any type of oil or water based paint you like.

Good finish comes from good preparation.
1. using spackle, fill in any dents and cover over exposed nail heads that are often the result of installation.
2. sand spackle after it dries. repeat steps 1 and 2 if needed.
3. prime surface with a white wash- one part white paint with one part water.
4. after whitewash completely dries, see if running a soft sand paper over it is needed to further smooth everything.
5. paint desired color, and the mixing in water is not a bad idea.
6. just an addition... a nice knob or handle will give the wardrobe a nice, finished designer touch.

Take regular cheap paint, make sure you prep the surface as already mentioned. add normal pva glue to your paint and mix well before applying. It will give you a better finish, and reduce the relative water content of the paint.
