I am not sure if I should get one. I need to know the uglies about these birds. I know the good stuff.

I can tell you honestly I am not a good 'too owner. They're too much into everything. I don't want a parrot I have to chase around to see what trouble s/he is getting into. I don't mind some activity but 'toos just have waaay too much energy. I had a goffin's, that's how I know. I also had a grey and she suited me fine. I didn't have to worry too much with her as she preferred to just sit and watch me or talk. She was animated, don't get me wrong, she wasn't a stick parrot and she liked to play but not at all like the goffin's who was like a toddler on harley wheels...

I now own a MRH amazon (aka green cheek amazon) and he's somewhere in between the two. But he's 20 years old now...and I can't imagine all amazons are like him. Although I admit, he CAN be loud, that I expect from all parrots. Anyway, please give me the uglies of DYH's so I can see what I am getting into.

The double yellow-headed are a wonderful companion. They are very colorful, especially the red streaks on their inner tail-feathers. They have a talking ability similar to yellow naped amazons. They can have a massive vocabulary, and uniquely, they can develop many tones (or "voices") for every word and phrase. For the most part, they are fairly self entertained. They can be very choosy about when they spend time with you. However, when they want to, they can be very affectionate. Their noise levels can be high (of course), but they mostly communicate in soft tones. It is best to provide them with an extensive playgym and large cage, if possible. They are some of the most acrobatic parrots you can find, And, if you are worried about how much trouble they can cause, they are nothing compared to a 'too!
