I am a frequent traveler to the US since 1984 . Last year when i arrived to detroit i was asked by the officer at the front desk to go to a back room to do a special registration , where they took my fingerprint and my photo and they told me that i have to do special registration everytime i enter or exit the US .
- Does this procedure still exists ?
- Can i apply for a waiver , as the registration might take up to three hours depending on the number of people waiting to register ?
- to whom should i apply for the waiver ?
- is there any conditions or requirements to get the waiver ?

This all the special registration can be triggered by a lot of things, but most likely it was due to your home country, gender, and/or age. There are a group of countries that almost always have to go through special registration. If you meet one of those categories, you are out of luck. Just make sure you plan your trips with a two hour extra window for this meeting.

Where are you from? UK citizens can get a biometric passport now that contains the fingerprint, iris info etc and this might mean you can bypass this step.
