A language isn't just used to communicate, it is part of a country's identity.

Well you're not so hot on English yourself, my friend.

First lesson... the correct phrasing and punctuation of your question:-

Why doesn't everyone learn English?
With all of the different languages why don't we just all speak English?

It would indeed be logical and in many ways beneficial to have a universally accepted amd understood language and English fits the bill better than most. Although statistically speaking there are more Chinese speakers in the World than there are English speakers, English is more widely spoken both in terms of the number of countries which count English as a first language and the number of countries (and people) who use/speak/learn English as a second language.

It's not a question of deciding which language is "the best" as much as agreeing on which one is the most widely accepted and recognised, particularly in terms of cross-border communications such as the Internet. It has been the case for many years that even quite remote and isolated communities have some knowledge of English through listening to the radio, for example. The inexorable spread of the Internet and satellite TV and communications means that there are now very few people who can claim to have never seen or heard a word of English, which is fast becoming the international language of communication.

The main disadvantage would be the incredible loss of regional and national languages and dialects which contribute a great deal to the richness and diversity of human culture.

One has to learn English so that the person can go freely any where in the world. It is the International language spoken almost everywhere in the world. It acts as an umbrella to safeguard one's interests. A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

For one, English is one of the most difficult to learn in the world. Our phonics system is derived from a multitude of languages(mostly germanic in origin) so its not really the easiest Second language to speak. Plus as time goes on people in different regions develop slang which is what evetnually develops into a different language. The key to a universal world language would be to set a standard that could be adhered to which English has certainly failed to do. Not a bad idea, just some inherent difficulties that would have to be addressed.

That's just a silly question, kid.

Who decides which language is the best? English is one of the hardest languages to learn, and has the most inconsistancies. Asking everybody to speak English is like telling everybody to wear the same clothes, drive the same vehicles, and make all decisions the same way.

Not only that, but who is going to pay to teach EVERYBODY to learn english? We'd have to teach even the poorest of people in the remotest areas.

the international does no longer revolve around the english language. if human beings have been to purely talk a language, the worlds beauties and mysteries could be lost. there are countless issues you will no longer actually translate into our language, which if tried, might harm the which skill or interpretation of 'em.

OK, as long as we do not have to eat the same universal food.

English I can stand as a universal language but the hamburger or hot dog as the universal cuisine - yuk
