The sharp pain that you get in your stomach is when you get a stitch it is caused while running, it is like the pain that you get when you are given stitches without anaesthetic, and that's why it is called a stitch, i think lol... hope this has helped you.

Why is anything called anything? who knows!
Its caused by over-eating or over-drinking before exercise apparently
