There are lots of different operating systems. The major contender with Windows is UNIX. Unix has many different flavours made by different vendors. The most popular ones are
IBM Aix
Sun Solaris
Linux (Different flavours for this too)
HP Unix
Another popular operating system is Macintosh made by Apple. The currently runs on Apple hardware only.
If you're looking on getting another operating system other than Windows, i'll reccommend Linux as the majority of it is free and quite user friendly. Try Ferdora Core at this link http://fedora.redhat.com/download/ . You can download from the site but you can also order the CD versions.

There are UNIX and LINUX. LINUX is an advanced version of UNIX. And it's free. Also Mac is another pc by7 Apple. But Don't know whether it qualifies as an OS. LINUX is the most popular after Windows although Mac is in contention since LINUX is free.
