you cant help her sweetie ... only she can do that ( with help )
you can offer her love and support and try to understand the reasons she does so...
it is a very difficult thing for anyone to watch someone else doing...
but the more you say it is wrong , the more guilt she will have and this itself will lead to more cutting
it is a release ... it is a feeling of being alive ... it is just feeling something that is real for her
maybe educate yourself to why people self harm and ways to help ...
this is a search on self harm and plenty of sites to chose from
http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?p=self+harm&fr=ush-ans
much love to you and to your sister ... and remember ... she isnt doing it just for attention , she just doesnt know another way to cope xxx
no disrespect to Humpty below..... but taking the knives away only esculates the problem and she may find something more harmful to use .... please believe me, i have been through this with someone i love dearly

I used to do this a lot. You need to understand where she's coming from. People say it's a cry for help, not so in my case, I had an abusive father that would have beat me more if he knew I was cutting myself. It comes from an emotional pain, which makes you feel dead. Cutting yourself brings the pain to the forefront and releases endorphines, which actually make you feel good. This is a natural biological response and has nothing to do with mental health, any time you are in serious physical pain your mind works to counteract it which is what "going into shock" is all about. She is likely dealing with some issue of self-hate or low feelings of self-worth, without knowing the issue there isn't much one can do. In my case I just stood up one day and kicked my father's as's, he has never laid a hand on me since, hence no need for self-mutilation.

I used to cut myself too. I know it sounds strange, but the physical pain I inflicted on myself actually eased the emotional pain I was in.
I had an addiction issue at the time. I had to check into a 28 day rehab and get serious about getting some mental help.
Also, pray, pray, pray. There is hope. It's been a decade and I'm drug free and I haven't cut myself since.
Keep the faith and good luck!

is she alone then? dear prayer alone does not work but follow it up with action...... specially since your protective of her and yet u live away to give her immediate help, so the danger lies still, maybe its best that u have soemone take care of her round the clock . My prayers be with u. God bless

you need to find a way to get your sister treatment.
I also have a brother who is mentally ill. I have found that confrontation is sometimes the worst thing you can do.
you need to be understanding (and even agree when she is wrong) but in all cases you need to gently convince your sister to get professional help before she takes her own life.

Give her lots of Love and Support. don't Judge her or tell her she's
stupid. and try to get her into a support group.
If your sister needs a friend she can e-mail me anytime. that goes for you too. I will Pray for both of you.

I agree with "The Dude", it sounds as if your sister is emo and will need lots of help. Yes, prayers will help too, and I will pray for her.

Your county should have a mental health department. Contact them. Your sister is not well.
