This lens will work fine on a D40.
You can't use all zooms however. With the D40, Nikon did not include an AF motor. This means that auto focus lenses only work (in auto focus mode) if the lens has an internal motor. This Tamron lens does, so you're okay. A lot of AF lenses have an internal motor. But there are also AF lenses that don't (such as the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF). Those lenses will only work properly on the D50 and up.
You could still use those lenses on the D40 and focus manually, but due to the smallish viewfinder and the lack of a split-prism focussing screen, it would be a real pain.
And then there's the old manual focus lenses (such as Nikon AI and AIS lenses) that won't even give you a proper exposure reading. Those lenses only work properly on the D200 and up.

Any modern lens with a Nikon SLR mount should work fine on your D40.
Apart from very old lenses, the main incompatibility is that you can't use lenses designed for digital cameras on film ones (they produce a smaller image), but the other way is fine.
The "crop factor" does mean, though, that it will produces images with the apparent magnification that an 80-300mm lens would on a film camera.

hi
i don't know the answer to this, but had the same question - i like the previous answer, thorough and well explained.
How do you like your D40? I love mine, although i am wondering if I should return it for the D50 because of the issue with lenses and autofocus. but i love how small, light and easy it is to use, so i'd rather not trade. if i can get a lens like this one at a good price, that would make me happier....
