Salaam
It was for the same reason that Solomon(a.s) were allowed to have 700 wives (mind you he also had 300 concubines).
Those marriages were mostly for political reasons. To strengthen bond between tribes, etc.
Most of Muhammad's wives were quite old when he married them. Some were widows, some were divorced. The exeption is Aisha(r.a).Some say she was 9, 11, 14,etc.Her age is not known.(Mind you some of Solomons wive could have been that young. It was normal amongst the people that time). Muhammad(a.s) first wife,Khadijah(r.a), was also much older than him

he is exception, he has a message to send. and each of his wife has a reason or a wisdom. such as he married a woman from the enemy to get people to like each other. and because he can't divorce any of his wives.
[52] It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives even though their beauty attracts you......
Quran 33: 52
and Muhamamd does not need to be a prophet so he can have more than one woman, it was a common practice in Arabia. however before he was a prophet. he was married to only one woman, he remained with her for 15 years till she dies, while men in arabia can have many women. why then he didn't marry any woman beside her especially that he was in his 20s and 30s (the highest sexual urges in a man).

He was a Prophet and he follow what GOD has commanded. GOD commanded others to have four wife if they can provide maintenance and equality, if not best to marry one.
Four wives mean, man should have at any time, in case of death of a wife or divorced he can marry fifth time to make it four wives at a time and so on.
Grounds For Polygamy*
[4:3] If you deem it best for the orphans, you may marry their mothers - you may marry two, three, or four. If you fear lest you become unfair, then you shall be content with only one, or with what you already have. Additionally, you are thus more likely to avoid financial hardship.
[4:4] You shall give the women their due dowries, equitably. If they willingly forfeit anything, then you may accept it; it is rightfully yours.

In the time of prophet Muhammad (pbuh),society was was cruel to women, especially women with no family, husband, and who could not have children. All types of abuses were carried out on these women in these situations.Hence the reasons of Muhammad (pbuh) marriages. If you take time to look up this issue on a website or read up on Muhammad(pbuh) you will see that every marriage was beneficial to the women in question, and in Islam if polygamy is allowed so it so not one rule for one and one rule for another!

Well Prophet Mohammad P.B.U.H did not marry those women for pleasure but to support them as they had no one to take care for them and he also married them to make good relations with other tribes people because everyone wanted Him to be a part of their tribe as He was so nobel.Back then there were no laws for marriage nor for women and it was He who brought them in by the grace of Allah.I hope this answers your question as this is something in short.May Allah keep you safe.

In fairness, that was the standard at the times for wealthy or influential men.
Kind of left us normal guys with a smaller pond to fish from, eh?

the reason that we can't love two girls at the same time is not our nature , why you're running from the truth . that's because of our society .
let me tell you about ayeshe his nine year-old wife , ayeshe was daughter of AbuBakr , he was one of muhammad's friends en he asked muhammad to marry his daughter, in arabia in that time refusin' to marry a girl from a famous family meant saying yes to an unwelcomed war , you see muhammad had to accept his offer , if you read the history you'd certainly understand that muhammad was never satisifed with ayeshe in his life .
all of his marriages was political en for a better relationship with other tribes .
what if you lived in a society that having several wives was ok ?
accept the truth : nothing's enough for men .
suppose you have a wife and love your wife more than anyone else
but you see a very beautiful woman somewhere else and she looks at you , cenrtainly you wouldn't start lovin' that woman but your heart would start beating fast , please do not tell me you wouldn't have such a feeling , that's because of your nature , because you love all good things and you love to own all of them but your society controls you .
I love my wife en i cant not love anyone else but i know that's because of my society and my calture .
you compare the standards of today with the standards of that old time , i'm not saying all of this because muhammad was a prophet i'm just talkin about the truth , if you're not seeking the truth that would be something else .
and why muhammad was allowed to marry more than 4 wives but others could not ?
according to Koran god orders this ,not muhammad himself, so what we should study about is : Koran is from god or muhammad ? not why muhammad was allowed to marry more than 4 wives . if you believe Koran is from god so there's no reason to ask such a question but if you prove Koran is muhammad's words you'd be right en i wouldn't say anything more ...
god bless you all .
