Why is Black Forest is called Black Forest? Any story behind the name?

The dominant species of tree in the Black Forest have always been conifers, fir and spruce, which makes the mountains look very dark, as opposed to the Vosges on the other side of the Rhine, where there used to be mostly oaks and beeches.

They have a lot of Evergreens, it's like the Black Hills in South Dakota, there not black, it's just a lot of pine trees.

It's so thick with trees it's dark even in the daytime.
