This called "Moulee". This is a sacred thread which is tied around the wrists before doing any ritual (Yagya, donation or other worships)

This thread is a sort of "Sankalpa"...vow to complete the ritual. After the ritual is over this thread is flown into a river

i think its sort of christian cross type thing a sort of religious symbol for Hindu it keeps indicating something to wearer depending on time,occasion,ceremony at the time of wearing it

its called RAKSHA bandhan and their sister give them to wear. its sort of ritual thing and a promise to their sister that they (brothers) will protect them from any evil.
