for instance in China, Christianity has never been a leading force. Women aren't treated very well. Even today, the suicide rate here for women is higher than for men (the suicide rate among men is higher throughout the world). My opinion is that the Bible has made it better for women in the West.

I don't think that the Bible had anything to do with it(mostly). The liberation of woman in the west were achieved by strong woman who felt that they are equal to men.And in most respects deserves the same treatment.
What about the witch trials? All free-thinking women were accused of being witches!

Product of both. Though the church did nothing to promote equality, save for the fact that women shouldnt be stoned for adultery. They should stiell shut up and be lower than men, according to the Bible.
And yet society was the same everywhere really. The funny thing is, no men seemed to complain that women were treated like objects and expected to be submissive... That amazes me since I know I'd HATE to have a wife who just did whatever I said... How can you fall in love with a robot?
Idiots.

The bible did not promote better lives for women in the west. Women promoted better lives for women in the west. You got knocked down, got back up, dusted yourselves off, and kept on fighting. That's one of the main reasons I like the United States- it all started here. I could not imagine a world where a person was a lesser being because they were a different color, or had different parts. Women are awesome! Lets have a female president.

What sexism in the Church? The church to which I belong -- the Roman Catholic Church -- has untold opportunities of service for women.
The RCC is a big outfit that has a lot of organizations, departments, and facilities. Many of these are run by women.
Indeed, the Church could not operate on a day to day basis without the service of women -- nuns and laywomen alike -- who fill all sorts of important roles in Catholic life.

The bible itself promote equity between men and women as GOD created EVE in the same level as ADAM not on top or on the bottom
But still head of family is man.
Throught the history is only becoz the men themselves bcoz the ego treat women as second class, object of sex

Have you actually read the bible? Have you any idea how it treats women?
For example, if a man rapes an unbetrothed virgin, he must pay her father 50 shekels of silver and then marry her.
Luke 2:23 teaches us that males are holy, but females are not.
There are many, many other examples.

I don't know how a woman - any woman - can read the bible and not feel utterly repulsed.

All Churches are afraid of women' sexuality. Because the best way to lure a man out of the church is to lure him in onto a bed, if you see what I mean. Did not it seem obvious to you since a long time ?

Both, without a doubt. It doesn't help that women are blamed for many of the sins of the human race, in the OT.

Both. The Bible was written before morals evolved to where they are now. Because it was written by men, its content is subject to human nature.

I think it's probably fair to say 'both.'
The Bible is pretty good about putting women in second class seats and men (in general) are pretty good at being aggressive individuals who act in protective and domineering ways toward women. I don't see it as an either/or....
