coca leaves are good, but illegal in the US (they can be used to synthesize cocaine), but the kola nut from Africa is good for what you need - it also works as an appetite suppressant. You would have to look hard to find this though.

I totally understand where you're coming from! I'm a college student too and sometimes the only time I can get homework done is late at night when it's quiet! But then I get so tired. Anyway, I don't have a lot of suggestions. One thing I've tried that has worked before is I get a big bag of sunflower seeds and keep my mouth busy cracking the shells. It helps 'cuz it keeps me alert. That way I'm not just sitting still doing nothing but reading, etc. Besides caffeine, I don't know what else works. Usually I just try to stay awake on my own, but I know...it's hard!!! Oh, by the way, DO NOT eat chocolate!!! I've tried eating chocolate late at night while studying. For a little while after I ate it I perked up and was ok, but after a while, the little candy "high" wore off, and I was worse than before I ate it! I felt drowsy and just 'bleh.' And plus, candy isn't that good to use as a stimulant, 'cuz it's not good to eat a lot of sugar late at night. (although I have been guilty of this ;))

the other suggestions are good ones. also, a 20 minute power nap beforehand helps to boost your energy to start with. limit it to 20 minutes, any more and you'll be groggy for studying, any less and its pointless. after your nap, grab a bite to eat (nothing too much, just a snack) and do something to get your mind moving (like a fun yet stimulating game, sudoku maybe?). be sure you aren't too sleepy when you are working otherwise you aren't getting anything valuable accomplished and will just be harming your body for no reason. good luck on finals! i'm in the same boat here too.

in the future, try taking a legal amphetamine. it will give you some energy and really get you focused, almost excited about doing your work, believe it or not.

try going for a quick run or do some jumping jacks. exercise will increase blood flow to all your body parts, including you brain. it will give you more energy for at least 2 hours.

You could try chewing some gum. That will keep you active yet not distracted from your work.

when you feel sleepy, just eat....it works for me.....ok, here's a list:
1. just eat
2. stand up and stretch
3. splash your face with water

p.s. 10 jumping jacks and smile while you're doing it (my friend told me)

----hope, this helps!
