Why does my excel 2003 worksheet having numbers across the top and numbers down the left side instead of lette

Check the worksheet upper left corner. If it says "R1C1" you need to click on "Tools" then "Options". Then click on "General" tab and uncheck the R1C1 reference style box. click on OK and the letters will be along the top.

that was the format in the column books.
