My son just started studying karate, he is 4 years old. He recently got a promotion from white belt to white with a yellow stripe. Right now they are working on something called "Little Dragon". They have only gotten to the 4th step because new kids keep coming into the class every week & they don't have time to do the next few steps. I was wondering if there was anyone who could tell me the steps so I could practice with him so he could advance to yellow belt sometime in the near future. So far he has learned 1) step & down block 2) step and single punch 3) step and downblock & 4) step and single punch. Can anyone help? Also they are starting to teach the yellow belts "Tiger 1". I know that there are many different teachings in martial arts, but maybe someone could help me out. Thanks.

Never heard of it but it seems like the Instructor has to much on his hands. he needs to get advanced students to help teach with the class. so the begginers who are more advance can still learn on the level they need to be on.

Well to answer your question. It sounds like your describing a basic taikyoku form. If so then the next step (assuming you stepped left side, punch, then right side, punch) would be step front and down block, then step punch, step punch, step punch. Then repeat the whole things facing the rear. However the guy above is right. I wouldn't really teach any further than what he's already learned and wait for his instructor to do it. The other suggestion I have would be to take your son to the adult class to watch. I'm certain that there will be some people there that would gladly perform that kata or some that are similar. I've found that a great way to keep kids interested and practicing is to let them "observe" some of the better students doing the basics.

This sounds much more like Kung Fu than Karate. Even if I were familiar with the kata, the same kata often varies from dojo to dojo. I would not recommend learning more than what the sensei has already instructed him in. It will almost certainly be technically wrong, and many instructors don't like their students going elsewhere for instruction. Don't worry so much about belt progression; it doesn't mean anything, especially for a four year old. If you really want to help your son try (1) talking to the sensei about your concerns (2) switching schools to somewhere your son can get private instruction (3) learning a martial art yourself so that you can better guide your son's learning.
