Every Spanish noun is either masculine (m.) or feminine (f.)
Sometimes they're gender neutral, too.
For instance, if you wanted to say "the book" in Spanish,
it would be "el libro"
The reason is because the noun "libro" is masculine.
Another example, if you wanted to say "the woman" it would be "la mujer" in Spanish. The reason is because the word "mujer" is feminine.
The only way you're going to know whether the word is masculine and/or feminine is by learning it.
Here's a general rule but it's not always true.
If the noun ends with an "-o" often times it's gonna be masculine.
If the noun ends with an "-a" often times it's gonna be feminine.
However, this isn't always true.
You have to learn them.

My best wishes in learning Spanish.
¡Buena suerte!

la is feminine, el is masculine.
You use la with feminine words:
la cerveza
And you use el with masculline words:
el camion
Every word in Spanish has a gender, either masculine or feminine

la = the (femenine)
el = the (masculine)
In principle to know that will help you a lot. It remains a little tricky though, because as usual there are exceptions to the rule.

yup like the dude above me above him said (a) usually femenim and (o) usually masculin, but not always the case like lets say "the map" in spanish is "el mapa" and not "la mapa" even though it ends with an (a) you got to write it as it was a masculin word.
