Dogs are ---at the absolute base--- pack based animals
when you have a dog as a pet -- you are the alpha (top dog) or at least -- should be------AND---- that pet will (in most cases) be at a total devotion thing TO YOU-----
They know that you are communicating to them when you use speech and they will at times do their damndest to emulate that in order to give back what they precieve AS communication as best they can----
Your pet knows the pitch and tone of this communique you are putting out and associates it with the play thing where it is commonly used and is at an attempt to tell you what it thinks you want to hear in response---that being----me, too--- I like this too !!
We have been major dog owners for decades and have had some unbelievable circumstances with various dogs in our lifetime concerning this verbal communication thing---- Have a female Jack Russell at this present time that LOVES to talk to you under her breath with these little grunts and huffs and low toned growls ---that when one hears them put all together -- actually sounds like she is talking to herself in actual words !!! It is some really amazing stuff and just another reason that they are so very special ---each and every one of them !!!
Love your pet strong and long---you'll never out do them in this !!!

Our dog does the same thing, only he starts the conversations! It's not a bark or anything, but a bunch of different syllable sounds in different pitches, with a few whiny begs mixed in. It's hilarious! We say he's talking for sure.

My dog Sparky(RIP) used to "talk" he would do these snorty, growly, inhaling type sounds. I know some people think I'm crazy, but he would talk to everyone. He would sure have a lot to say when he return from an escape from the back yard. I miss that dog. Yeah so I think he is trying to talk to you in his own special way. Way to go for listening.

When I read your question, it made me smile. My dogs "talk" to me all the time - for a variety of reasons; if we're playing, if they want to go outside, to get my attention, etc.
Funny short story - I also have a cat. He lets me know if the water bowl is empty, if his food bowl is empty and if the dog's food bowl is empty.
It sounds as though your dog is expressing emotion - your spending time with him and he loves it!

He is just exited. If I pretend like I'm crying my chihuahua will start to howl. Dogs are funny little critters aren't they?

Different breeds communicate differently. My schnauzer is 6 years old, and is a chatter-box. Schnauzers are famous for how much they talk and how well they can talk to humans. Schnauzers will actually tell you what they want.
