Is there any way to burn an audio CD so that it works in all players? What's the diff between mine and what I buy at the store? How do I fix this? Using Linux, btw.

No. The format for 1 player is different than those for others. Back in the 70's they came out with 8 track and cassettes. In the 80's, it was Beta and VHS. Now, we have several different formats of music, dvd's, and high def TV's. Give it 6 months or so until the manufacturers agree as they have done in the past.

Some of the cheaper or older c.d. players will not play cd-r. Many factory car c.d. players will not play them either. I don't think there is a way to rectify this situation.

try burning at 4x or slower speeds, and make sure you are copying the tracks as .wma's or .cda's NOT MP3's
