If you look around, there are actually several. The most common are Windows, Mac OS, and Unix/Linux.
Some other operating systems are:
ReactOS:
Built to be completely compatible with Windows, able to run any Windows program without any modification.
Haiku:
A continuation of Beos (another OS not made anymore) by a group of developers.
Amiga:
A no longer used OS, came with Amiga computers.
Basically, there isn't really a countable number of Operating Systems. There are more like 2 and a half common OS's, Windows, Unix/Linux, and MacOS is a half because it is now heavily Unix based.

Two, Windows and Linux. Windows has many upgrades in its versions, Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, NT, XP, and the latest Vista. I don't know much about Linux, but it is much safer than Windows, but that's because it's free so hackers won't bother create a virus for Linux since the user can download it for free..
