Nicotine has a short half life so the actual addictive craving for the nicotine will be over in about 3 days. However, the craving for a cigarette can last for months. The association of the smoking behavior with the acute administration of the addictive nicotine into your brain reward centers creates a very strong circuit. The smoking behavior is also associated with other activities. For example, the phone rings and you reach for a cigarette, you smell coffee and reach for a cigarette, it's break time/lunch time at work and you reach for a cigarette. These associations are deeply connected in your brain reward centers even after the nicotine is long gone. So now, the phone rings or you smell coffee or it's break time at work and you crave a cigarette even though your brain is no longer addicted to the nicotine and the brain receptors that were stimulated by it are normalized. Do everything you can to avoid old triggers or break them up with new behaviors. Go for a walk at lunch time instead of what your usual routine is, hyperventilate instead of having a cup of coffee and get a little oxygenation and a buzz from that. Do anything to make new behavior associations. Some persons have tried the rubber band trick. Put a plain rubber band on your wrist and every time you crave cigarette, give it a snap. The little jolt, the different sensory stimulation, the different motor responses of reaching for the rubber band, pulling it, letting it go, etc. breaks up the automatic circuit in your brain that has develped over the years with smoking. ANYTHING is better than going back to smoking!

Why would you wanna give up smoking anyway. The craving is their because your body knows it needs it. Why make yourself suffer mentally for years trying to avoid that craving when you can have a ciggie and be blessed with that heavenly smoke for 5 minutes which can save that years of suffering. People are way too paranoid about smoking. So what if it kills you early. Atleast you dont have to face old age. Besides, I have seen people smoking for decades and never get cancer or die early. You are more likely to die in a car accident than by cancer. So go ahead and have a smoke. Dont listen to all the haters. Smoking feels good. Lot of benefits. Takes care of that craving and also relaxes the mind. You also feel more fulfilled after a cigrette. They are good socially and make you look cooler.

Unfortunatly, it takes years, not hours, you will ALWAYS have cravings, always, they just get alot easier to ignore over time.
