What time people and animals eat bear no relationship to how fat they are. This is an old misconception. Cats sleep a lot and are generally nocturnal, so when you feed your cat is not something to worry about. How many calories an animal takes in compared with how much exercise an animal gets is something to worry about (this goes for people too). Essentially, the best way to get a cat to slim down is to feed it wet food instead of dry food. There is more fat in wet food and so it takes fewer wet food calories for the cat to feel satisfied. Fat in food triggers an "I feel full" response. This is also why its not good for people to eat so much "fat free" food, as they will generally eat more calories than they would have had they had something with some fat in it. (some fats are better than others...do some research if you'd like to learn more about it for your own health). An average cat will do well on 1 regular sized can of cat food a day (5.5 oz). I usually feed my cats a half a can in the morning and a half a can in the evening. I also give them 5 or 6 pieces of dry food to help clean their teeth as a treat.
As far as exercise is concerned, that can be more difficult to control. Getting fresh toys occasionally can spark an interest in play. Getting a cat tree that the cat has to make a little effort to climb is another good one. I have taught my cats to play a game I call "monster" where I hide, and jump out at them when they come near and chase them when they run away. When I catch them I pet them so they know I'm just playing. It took a while for them to get what I was doing, but now they like the game and will come searching for me in new hiding places during the course of the game. This game gives me a little exercise too!
Good luck and Good health.

You should feed your cat twice a day. If it is overweight you should feed it in the morning, take away the bowl after 10 or 20 min, then feed again at supper time around 5 or 6 for 10 or 20 min, then take the bowl away. It isn't healthy for a fat cat to be eating all day whenever she pleases.
Also try switching to a high quality no-byproducts food from a pet store. The protein is higher quality and the food has more nutrients in it. Cat will eat less and be full quicker. Grocery store food had fillers and by-products in it that aren't good for cats.

you should keep track of her weight....dont let her become fat like mine! now shes old and has too much fat in her liver. shes on a diet and taking some medication to help her liver get back to normal. if she doesnt get better she will have to go under the knife. keep your cat in good health...save u the vet bill and will let you keep your friend alive longer. what i do is i leave a spoonful over night just incase she gets hungry...as long as you feed her 1 can a day shes ok.

I wouldnt. People/animals do not digest food well while they are sleeping. Keep her on a schedule as you would yourself...errr, your kid. Eliminate the food about four hours before bed. At least, thats my opinion.
