Very basically, the energy in batteries is stored as chemical energy. When you use the battery, the chemical reaction produces electrons for the circuit. When you charge the battery, the reverse electron flow reverses the chemical reaction and the chemicals are ready for the next discharge.

take them out of the package, insert them into whatever needs power, plug it in with the provided AC adapter for the allotted time and presto they work!! TADA!!
