Are you speaking of the original Sicilian Mafia, the Japanese Mafia, the Russian Mafia, the Chinese Mafia, or another country's "secret" society? What about the Native American Indian mafia? The U.S. Government is subsidizing the Indian Mafia by allowing and encouraging the growth of Indian casinos. The U.S. government is trustee to tribes entitled to millions of dollars and acres of land that non-Indians gamble on, yet have no control over.
Indian gaming does not have to answer to the American gambler as Las Vegas or Atlantic City casinos have to answer. Due to their sovereignty, Indian tribes do not have to account to state and Federal governments. They do not have to divulge their "true" income; nor, or they required to "post" the "payout" on slots, blackjack, poker, or any other games of chance offered by their casino.
Sicilian, Mexican, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese Mafia have a code of ethics and a sense of family. Native American tribes operating casinos pay minimum wage or below, pay their CEO's and other adminstrative personnel astronomical wages, while keeping their supportive staff to minimum, or slightly above, wages.
I am a member of a Native American Indian tribe, who is a former employee of one of my tribe's casinos (seven in the state I reside in), and disappointed by the promises my tribe made to their tribal members about the housing, education, and job opportunities that would be available via gaming money. Those who received Indian housing, educational assistance, and significant job opportunites were relatives of the presiding Chief or Tribal Council.
There is an Indian Mafia. You have to be a relative of a "made" member in order to reap any benefits. Don't gamble at Indian casinos. Your money doesn't help the Indians who really need help: It only lines the pockets of the Chief and corporate executives.

"Mafia Groups" as we know them will always be around as long as society has a bottom class. Almost every Mafia can be traced to a smaller street operation. In the Ghetto as you know life is hard, people band together to protect themselves from the perceived outside infuences that are effecting them. This world is isolated from everyone in society, they for the most part abide by their own laws forming a culture that lasts even when conditions improve in their environment. A group with high loyalty and a defined purpose can rise fast in the criminal world. The smart ones use gangpower to rise to public office and become pillars of the community. That's just the low level gangsters, the worst are those who have money schooling and clout, billionares secluded in their little worlds with all their little puppets. "Mafias" represent an edge over the other guy, a way up, as long as man feels a need there will be those men.

You have as much possibility of eliminating the Mafia, as you would the street gangs of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, etc. As long as there are people wanting to join the gangs, then they will never be eliminated. All the Law Enforcement Agencies can do is to maintain some type of control and keeping them from getting out of hand.

Actually most Mafia groups in the US have been just about eliminated, well other than the Bush Mafia of course and even
they seem to be, at last in their final days.

If you are referring to "thugs" then you have the wrong view of mafia.
For one: Our "honest" politicians must Stop accepting their money.
They are sophisticated, state of the art business fronts, wealthy to the max, and provide HUGE Campaign Funding.
