My son's first birthday is this saturday, and we're having a HUGE party for him (ponies, petting zoo, jumping balloon, etc.). The only problem is I have no idea what games to play with the kids, or how many. It's a western themed party so I'm looking for games that go with that theme...any suggestions?

We're going to have kids of all ages there, as well as many of our own friends and family...I understand that he won't remember it, but my husband and I want to celebrate our (only) child's 1st birthday big.

They would probably like things like sing a longs since they are so young. If there are older kids you can have the usual pinata or pin the tale on the donkey. Littler kids have such short attention spans they probably wouldnt be interested in big kid games. My friend played a game at her daughters 1st bday that was basicly a sit in a circle type thing and she passed a box full of littel toys and prizes around and everyone got to take one. I honestly think that was the most fun for the little kids. She also hid little toys around the yard (by that i mean just laying them in the grass) and let all the babies go get them. I think since it is a cowboy themed party you could play some little western tunes (like the wiggels have a western type cd) and let the kids dance and play freeze when you turn the music off or something. Kids can get tired of games though and so do parents. I would go with just 3 maybe. Hope this helps!

Who is the party for? Your son is only one so there are not alot of games he could play, Even if there are going to be older kids there you might find that with so much going on it is difficult to get the kids together to play a game, At any rate here are some ideas that should suit a variety of ages:

Pinata in the shape of a cowboy hat
Treasure hunt- hide horse shoes that the children have to bring back to claim their reward.
Musical chairs with saddles instead of chairs

I suggest having a hell of a lot less for his first birthday than the almost "circus" you're planning. He isn't going to no what is going on and probably half way through will start whining and crying. The best first birthday party is a small one with parents grandparents and maybe a couple of children. The child has no idea what is going on and I suspect the parents are doing this all for show.

Please please please is there some way not to have the petting zoo because the animals have salmonella all over them and the kids can get sick. Be sure to wash their hands if they touch the ponies and do not let them eat until they are washed.

We have Pinatas here and the kids love them

You can make one if you cannot buy one. Just take chicken wire and form it into a shape then decorate with crepe paper - the gaudier the better and stuff with all kinds of candies.

We did the same for my daughters 1st, she sleep through the whole thing awoke to a backyard filled w/ gifts & no guests. Don't worry you have enough stuff for them to keep busy with, they will like that more than the games. Just get them each a favor bag to take home!
