I say, "I've ""chosen"" " because I had a very pushy classifier offer me little more than that. I thought maybe it was because I scored low on my asvab but every time someone asks me what I got and I tell them I get a, "Hey that's great!". I remember sitting in the classifiers office, asked him what I got, he said I did really well in Electronics Information, (or something like that) and offered me AV. I personally have no interest in aviation and I remember while I was taking the asvab coming across a question like Q: What is an Ohm?. I didn't even know what an ohm was, I have little to no knowledge of electronics. And so, I asked if there was anything else and after a long pause I got a "Well, everything else is a lower job than that, yak, yak, yak; So yakady yak." Poo for me. I'm not sure what to do, I talked to my recruiter but, you know how recruiters are. So, what does an AV do? Obviously an AV works on Aircraft on an aircraft carrier but... what do they do? Really?

Ok you will have 2 choices at your "A" school on what you want to do. 1) AT( Aviation electronics tech) I have been in the navy for the past 7yrs and i am an AT my job consists of working on radar, navigation, communication, infered detection equipment. Pretty much every electronic component in an aircraft belongs to you.It is a fun and challenging job, i didn't know the first thing about and ohm or an amp, after "A" school i had a basic mind set on how things were going to go. the other choice you will have is AE(Aviation electiricion) They mostly deal with the wiring in the aircraft, change out burnt lightbulbs. Also if you do good in "core" that will be the first 2months of your "A" school then you get put in to be an AT or AE depending on what the navy manning needs. If you do good enough in core and go AT you can go i level(intermedete) where you work in an airconditioned shop all day running tests on vairous parts. IF you get a choice go to a VP squadaren(P-3) they do deploy but you will not go on a boat, you get paid per diem up to $3,000.00 a month extra on top of your paycheck depending on where you go. you stay in barracks rooms usually have a room to yourself. but in the AV rating you will work with electronics and it is a very challenging job so if you like to challenge yourself then this will be a job for you.. good luck..
If you would like to ask me more questions about the (AV) rating you can email me at davydave98277@yahoo.com i will awnser all your questions to the best of my knowlege..

Are you joking ? Don't you get some basic training ? Maybe you should ask for Basic Training form the higher ranking people. How can you be uninterested in aviation. Aviation = Glory. An ohm is unit of resistance. It is named after George Ohm an engineer working on elecromagnetism. Why can't you be more enthusiastic about such delights ? If I was in your position. I'd join the Navy just so I could be on the aircraft carrier hugging and kissing the airplanes. How can you chose a job and not know what the job is all about ? Did you even wach Top Gun at least 3 times in your life ?

I have a few things, I'm active duty, have been 18yrs now. If you feel that you were pressured into a job then talk to the recruiter, they'll try to get you out of it and into something you really want to do. The other thing is AV is a good field, can lead to a good job in the civilian work force with air line companies. Check the link attached to this answer it will explain a lot.

if memory serves AV is Avionics... thats a general term for Aircraft Electronics it would then specialize out into two levels one group works on the birds themselves the other is called Intermediate .. they work on the different components off the bird.. flight contros, ECM, Radios, Etc etc etc, if it is as it was 10 years ago youwould recieve trainning init in TN about an hour from memphis and would spend approx 9 months there before moving to your specialty school then off to the fleet.. if it is Avionics iwould assume you signed up for a 5 year deal or so
I did 6 in the marines for avionics myself so i went to the navy school back in 90

You will work at either the intermediate level of maintenance or the organizational level.
You do more trouble shooting and repairing of equipment at the intermediate level. AIMD (Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department)
You're mostly a parts changer at the squadron or organizational level. You replace black boxes and other electronic equipment with known good gear. The malfunctioning equipment is sent to AIMD for repair.

I hate commercials in general, but I find the old guy from the Six Flags commercials creepy. He was funny when those commercials came out about four years ago, but now it's just old and creepy.

The Navy is a pretty saavy military organization. I can't believe your classifying officer did not inform you as to what an AV did, or that you didn't have the balls to ask! I hope we don't have too many like you joining our military.

I've found several definitions, none very helpful. Near as I can figure you'll be working with video equipment. Maybe in charge of tapes or something to do with the ship's TV system.
