No, it's about as close as you can legally find in america, and what's better yet, is that it's televised. There are rules to prevent uneccesary injury and death, but otherwise it's go hard or go home all out fighting.

Oh yeah it's definitely for real. For a sporting event that is, absolutely none of it is choreographed or have a storyline or story arc like a primetime drama or soap opera.

have you EVER seen any "storylines" or backstage antics on any of their ppv's? no you won't find any of that in the UFC, Pride, IFL, or any other MMA event.

as the UFC tagline suggests, it's "as real as it gets".

now it is possible that there may be some things like taking dives for championship fights and such (this sport is JUST as susceptible to a little social engineering as any other folks, let's be realistic).

but it's NOT another "action soap opera" like WWE or ECW.

and just as spidertiger said, it doesn't ACCURATELY simulate an actual fight on the street because it's a CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT, with rules to follow.

Whereas a fight on the street means you do what you have to do to survive the encounter, so anything goes, because the other person on the street won't likely be looking to beat you, but kill you instead.

it has many part of real fighting it does have rules and those rules take out some of the best out. it is not to say that that it is real but that it cover good setion but is not the whole of it . the biggest thing to study a martail art and make it effective in all case . if you are in the ring or the street if adapted your style to what is happing it is the best for you. i personaly study in traditional and modern so that i see it from all angles not just one . come back to jkd and all ranges . punching /striking,kicking ,trapping ,locking/breaking,and the ground if can flow from the any of these to where you are best at then you have learned to be a real fighterl

It is not choreographed like professional wrestling if that is what you are asking.
These UFC warriors are fighting for real.
Is it real compared to a real self-defense situation? NO. It is very close in that it is full contact but it still lacks factors that make it as real as a real world self-defense situation.
Such as most attacks are being committed by aggressors that have an advantage like size, numbers, weapons or surprise. Criminals are predators. they are looking for an easy score. Now one frisks them for weapons, no one says go, there is no soft mat underneath of you. There are no wrapped knuckles. These are a few differences I can think of.

If by octagon, you mean UFC, then yes, it is as real as it gets. The only problem is that they have too many regulations. A more realistic fighting championship is FC Pride.

Its a real sport , a real fight is different , there are no rules , and the last place you want to be is on the ground . In a real fight there is no padded floor , no referee , no time limits , and no rules . As far as sport fighting though , its the closest you'll probably ever get . Well , unless they bring back gladiators in the Roman Colliseum .
