within my family, we had numerous cases when some ancestor would come in a dream and warn about something that will happen soon. It might seem like a hoax but then the foretold actually happens. Has anyone ever heard about such phenomena? What is the best explanation?

Yes. It's happened to me before. Some of us recognize it as a deja vu experience. It's God communicating to us in a dream.
This is just one example from the Bible. There are many.
Acts 2:17
"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:"
