Hi i live in a rented townhouse am i allowed to install a rain water tank in my property

The general rule is that you can bring in things that are not permanent fixtures, and that do not damage the building, without checking with your landlord. A rainwater tank would count as a fixture, so the landlord gets to veto it.

He will most likely be happy for you to pay a plumber to install a tank if that's what you want. The landlord wouldn't be under any obligation to pay to have one installed just because you'd like it.
